Unlock the Magic of Music: How “Little Grand Songs” Creates Connection Through Classic Baby Songs

little grand songs

Some of my earliest memories are wrapped in songs—gentle lullabies sung by my mother, rhymes that made me giggle as a toddler, melodies that felt like home. Years later, when I became a mother, those same songs found their way back into my voice as I held my own babies close.

That’s how Petites Grans Cançons was born—a little book filled with the big songs of my childhood. I illustrated our most traditional songs, and it was magical at home. First one, then another, both in Catalan, created with so much love. And to my surprise and delight, they weren’t just loved in our home but also by family, friends, and other parents looking to bring music into their everyday moments.

So it felt natural to create a version in English—Little Grand Songs—with the tunes that followed us during our years living in the UK. Songs that accompanied me not only in my childhood but also in my children’s. Songs that turned bedtime into a ritual, car rides into concerts, and rainy afternoons into stages for silly dancing.

This book is for those moments—the little ones that turn out to be the most grand of all. They are little songs that build big connections.

Why Singing Matters (even if you’re not perfect)

You don’t need to be a professional singer to sing with your children. In fact, they love your voice just as it is. To them, it’s not about hitting the right notes—it’s about hearing you.

Singing is one of the simplest ways to connect. It helps babies feel safe and soothed. It makes toddlers laugh and move. It builds routines, language, and memory in a way that feels effortless. One little melody can turn teeth-brushing into a game or ease the transition into sleep.

And when you sing together, something magical happens: your voices sync, your eyes meet, and for those few minutes, the world slows down.

The Science Behind the Songs

Long before your little one says their first word, they’re already listening. And long before they understand language, they understand melody.

🎵 Research shows that infants as young as two months can recognise and remember short melodies, even after minimal exposure (source).
🎵 A study from the University of Washington found that musical play boosts brain activity in areas responsible for both music and early language (source).
🎵 And research by Sandra Trehub revealed that singing soothes babies more effectively than speaking, helping regulate emotion and reduce distress (source).

So when you hum a lullaby, bounce to a rhyme, or clap along to a silly song, you’re doing something truly powerful. You’re helping their brain grow. You’re nurturing connection. And you’re turning ordinary moments into something unforgettable

How to Use Little Grand Songs

This book was designed to be as playful and versatile as the songs inside it. You’ll find 18 classic songs, each accompanied by a big, colourful illustration that brings the melody to life.

At the end of the book, there’s a double-page spread featuring all 18 illustrations (9 on each page). This visual index is perfect for little ones who aren’t reading yet but already know exactly what they want. They can point to their favourite image, and you can sing the song together. Or turn it into a fun game: “Which one is this?” you ask, and they light up when they recognise the melody.

Because young children learn to associate images and sounds from such an early age, this page becomes a beautiful way to give them autonomy, spark memory, and build musical connections—without needing to know a single word.

And for even more everyday magic, I’ve included two extra pages with all the song titles in one place. You can cut them out and hang them in the playroom, tape them to the fridge, or keep them near your favourite singing spot. They’re a gentle reminder to pause and sing—whether it’s just one song before bed, or a full concert in the living room.
